The Stages of a Hermit Crab's Life: The female holds the eggs (several hundred depending on her size) inside her shell while they mature. The eggs attach themselves to appendages on her abdomen until they are ready to hatch.

These eggs have to be released in the ocean. When they are ready to hatch, the female moves the appendages and the eggs are released from their grip.
